The Milwaukee Brewers and are commonly referred to as "The Brew Crew" or "The Crew" by their fans. The team was established in 1969 and they play in the Central Division of the National League. The team's unique name comes from ties with the brewing industry and their home games are played at Miller Park.
Though the team now resides in Milwaukee, it originated in Seattle, Washington with the team then called the Seattle Pilots. They played in Washington for one season before being acquired by Bud Selig in bankruptcy court. The team was originally part of the American League until 1997 when they transitioned to the National League Central Division.
Miller Park is their new home of the Milwaukee Brewers, and was opened in 2001. By the early 1990s, Milwaukee County Stadium was considered outdated as it was lacking the extra amenities such as luxury boxes that created additional profit for the teams. The plans for Miller Park were considered controversial; $310 million for building costs was acquired from public funds.Miller Park's most distinguishing feature was a retractable fan-shaped roof. This has been much appreciated by fans and has helped increase turnout during the chilly and erratic spring weather.
In recent seasons, the team has made a comeback from their previously poor performance. Upon the purchase of the team by Mark Attanasio, the team has showed a revived competitive spirit. The team now has a young base of talented players, such as J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Rickie Weeks. In 2007, the team had their best season finish since 1992, with a respectable record of 83-79. In 2008, the team went on to win the National League Wild Card, finishing the season one game ahead of the New York Mets. The Brewers made their first appearance in the National League Division Series in 2008 for the first time since early 1980s.
