Founded in 1901, the UConn Huskies Men's Basketball team is one of the founding members of the Big East conference. The Huskies are best known for the consistent successes of both the men's and women's basketball teams and their place in or near the top 10 nationally in their divisions. In both 1999 and 2004, the men's team won the NCAA Division I title and additionally in 2004, UConn became the first and only school in Division I to win the National Championships in men and women's basketball the same year. In addition to that, UConn is 8-0 in National Championships played. The Huskies ranked as one of the four #1 seeds and actually progressed to the Final Four where they were defeated by the Michigan State Spartans (82-73). Despite the men's loss, their women's team went on to have a perfect 39-0 season and they went on to take victory over Louisville in the NCAA Final to achieve t heir sixth championship title.

The great success of the Huskies has come from the consistently great coaching they've received over the years. Former players such as Hugh Greer have tried their hand at coaching and have had great results with the team. Greer's first season as head coach was 1946-47 and in this time he led UConn to an undefeated 12-0 season. Under his reign, UConn won 12 Yankee Conference titles in 16 seasons, including the impressive decade of wins from 1951 to 1960. In 1979, UConn was one of the seven teams that were the founders of the Big East Conference.

After Greer's great guidance, the next coach to make a big impact on the team was Jim Calhoun. His first season with the team was the 1986-87 season where the team finished with an unfortunate record of 9-19. The next season, the team improved greatly, gaining a berth in the NIT. In 1990, Calhoun coached a "Dream Season" which aided in bringing the Huskies back to the national stage. They went from unranked during the preseason to winning both the Big East Regular Season and Tournament Championships for the first time. 1990 was also the year the Gampel Pavilion opened, giving the team a home court on-campus. That year, UConn were #1 seed in the East Region but missed it at the Clemson game with a score of 70-69 with 1 second left in the Sweet 16. The Huskies continued success throughout the 1990s, winning the Big East Regular Season Tournament five more times and the Big East Tournament Championship three more times. In 1999, the team went to and won the NCAA Tournament and claimed the first national title that same year.
