The Villanova University Wildcats men's basketball team is members of the Big East Conference and also the Philadelphia Big Five. The Wildcats are a dynamic and fierce team, having played in the NCAA Tournament 29 times, earning the 8^th highest total in NCAA history. They have appeared in the NIT 17 times and took victory in 1994. They also won the Big East Tournament in 1995. They have played in the Final Tour several times and took the National Championship title in 1985. Upon entering the 2007-2008 season, the Wildcats had an all-time winning percentage of .637, putting Villanova 20^th among all NCAA Division I basketball teams. Since 2001 with the presence of Coach Jay Wright, the team has compiled an 11-5 record in the NCAA Tournament and four of the five losses were to the team that eventually were National Champions. Villanova has attained post-season tournament berth all seven seasons that Wright has been coaching. In 2002-2004 they appeared in the NIT and from 2005-2009 they played in the NCAA Tournament. Notable alumni from Wright's coaching tenure are Curtis Sumpter and Dante Cunningham. Curtis Sumpter is a 6'7" forward from Brooklyn, NY that averaged 15.3 points per game and 7.2 rebounds, leading Villanova to the Sweet 16 in the 2004-2005 season. After being red-shirted due to injury in the previous season, he returned for the 2006-2007 season and earned first team All-Big East honors. He is currently a free-agent and previously played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers. Dante Cunningham was chosen in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft and is currently a power forward for the Portland Trail Blazers.

In the 2009-2010 season, Wright has brought in a recruiting class in the top five of the national rankings. This includes a big-time point guard, a pair of forwards with scoring, block and rebound with power and a relentless scorer on the wing. This excellent class is thus far keeping the Wildcats on top in the Big East Conference.
